We sat down with Laura asked a few questions about what it's like working at Spencer Riley.

Q: Why did you join Spencer Riley?

I initially started my degree at Huddersfield Uni, studying law. After the first year, I decided that it wasn’t something I was enjoying, and the “educational life” wasn’t necessarily for me and wasn’t keen to continue. I decided to look online for new jobs as I realised Starbucks wasn’t going to get me where I wanted to be within my career and saw that Spencer Riley was advertising for a Trainee Consultant.   I applied and was asked to come in for an initial stage interview…the rest is history

Q: Tell us about your Spencer Riley career so far?

I started with Spencer Riley in 2019 in the Huddersfield office as a Trainee Consultant and moved to Leeds beginning of 2020 when Covid had just hit so it was a slow move to begin with. After Covid, the market really started picking back up and recruitment has been one of the best industries to work in since, and now being promoted again to Senior Search Consultant & Fulfilment Manager.

Q: What is most rewarding about your role?

For me, the most rewarding thing about the role is generally helping people and changing their lives for the better; whether financially, career progression, work/life balance or just their happiness…

Q: What skills, from your previous roles, helped with your transition to recruitment?

I only worked at Starbucks previously but from that I gained arguably one of the most important skills – customer service. This helps with not only speaking with customers and making sure their requirements are met but also listening to them and dealing with many different types of people from all backgrounds. It comes with communication, resolving problems, dealing with difficult customers and situations, and building relationships with people. For me, the best thing I learned from customer service was respect and integrity and always to be polite – use manners.

Q: What advice would you give someone who wanted a role in recruitment?

I think if you wanted to move into the recruitment world then you definitely need to show resilience.  You will get turned down and rejected a lot more than you ever have before but you need to take a step back to bounce back.

You need to have resilience, confidence, be realistic, ambitious, and driven.

Q: And finally, tell us about your future with Spencer Riley?

In the future, I would like to see myself managing a small fulfilment team in order to enhance the workflow and performance for our existing clients, and ultimately showing an increase in placements.  Thankfully, the training and support that Spencer Riley provide will ensure that my ambition is reached.
